Our origins, a tradition waiting to be discovered
A sip of tradition and passion, from our vineyard to your bottle.
Marchesi di Rampingallo has its roots in history. Indeed, on the evening between 12 and 13 May 1860, Garibaldi, the Hero of Two Worlds, and his Thousand arrived at the Rampingallo farm, where they spent the night. And it is precisely on those hills that the modern wine cellar, with all the most innovative equipment, stands today.
Not far away, it is possible to see the plaque erected on the occasion of the centenary in honour of the Man of Two Worlds, reinforcing the link and the profound value between territory and history, which have always characterised the company.
The olive tree where General Garibaldi, seated to recover from the fatigues of the landing, meditated on his strategy of attack on the Bourbon troops of General Landi, stationed in Calatafimi, can still be admired in all its majesty.
The history of Marchesi di Rampingallo is strongly linked to the winemaking tradition of Sicily. It has its roots in the Catalan Di Simon family, Spanish refugees first in France and then in Sicily, who arrived in the Trapani area in the second half of the 1500s and contributed to the worldwide success of Marsala wine.
The earliest record of the Marsala wine trade dates back to 1773 when J. Woodhouse shipped 60 casks of 412 litres each to England. Thus began the great history of a wine that was then called "English wine of Sicily to the use of Madeira", much appreciated in Anglo-Saxon countries. Together with the Woodhouses, some English gentlemen, the Inghams, and the Witakers, with a flair for business, moved from England to Sicily to sell a new product called Marsala to the world.
In 1811, the De Simon family, wealthy landowners in the wake of the English, inaugurated their wine cellar in Marsala in the baglio they owned, which led from there to Salemi. From there departed the Regie Trazzere (Royal Trails) that crossed the entire island. De Simone's business developed to the point of creating warehouses and stores not only in Italy and Europe but also in the United States.
Today, the Russo family has continued the ancient tradition by entirely renewing the wine production chain on their own farm and renovating the baglio dating back to the second half of the 18th century, transforming it in 1998 into a modern plant for the production of high-quality wines.
